Is there an ‘ugly’ side to Venice? Is it possible to countenance such an idea? If there is, it’s tourism or, more precisely, over-tourism.

Over-tourism is changing Venice profoundly, but that change is precisely what makes it such a compelling subject for a documentary street photography project. The danger is that Venice becomes a place people visit to photograph the idea of Venice, rather than a living city that happens to be extraordinarily beautiful. The familiar images - gondolas, the Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco, reflections in the canals - can conceal a more complicated reality: a historic city under pressure from the very people who come to admire it.

For a street photographer, that tension offers something richer than another collection of beautiful Venetian views. It offers a story about the collision between a living place and its transformation into a global attraction.

These images form part of an ongoing project about how Venice is selling its soul to tourism.
