STREET PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKSHOP
People often ask me about the street photography books I’m reading at the moment – or what my current recommendations are. So I’ve curated my list of favourites and have put them all together for you in one place.
Please have a look at my online street photography bookshop. All the books here are for sale through Amazon and the links will take you directly to Amazon. If you buy a book, please do so using these links – it won’t cost you any extra and you’ll still get your usual Amazon low prices – but it means I’ll get a few pennies as a ‘thank you’ from Amazon.
You’ll find the bookshop HERE. Do keep an eye on this page – perhaps bookmark it – as I’ll be updating it regularly with new books, interesting ‘finds’ and book news generally.
Thanks and happy browsing!
My latest Street Photography zine has arrived!
My new street photography zine is a portrait of the super-interesting and stylish Venetian people. It was shot in Venice over the past five years in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
The zine is A5, 44 pages, in full colour and saddle-stitched. This is a limited edition of only 200 copies. The cost is £9, including UK shipping (please contact me for a quote if you require overseas shipping). Please click here to order your copy.
WHAT IS STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?
In my latest video I run through some definitions of street photography, helping you find an approach that works for you.
Now that’s a big question! - and it's one which vexes many people who are new to street photography. Whilst there are accepted 'classical' definitions, new ways of working have emerged over the past 20 years or so and the boundaries have blurred. Of course, it's hard to offer a definitive 'right / wrong' definition and my latest video explore the definitions, helping steer you towards an approach which will work for you. You can watch the video on YouTube here.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WEBINAR WITH FUJIFILM
Last week I did a livestream webinar on Facebook for Fujifilm where I discussed different approaches to street photography and offered 10 tips to help you become a better street photographer. If you missed it, you can still catch the recorded version here.
THE BEST LENS FOR STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
It’s a big question - and one that I’m frequently asked. The short answer is a wide-angle prime of between 28-35mm (in full-frame terms). I’ve laid out some more detailed thoughts about which is the best lens for street photography - and why - in this YouTube video. Please have a look!
NEW DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP - A 12 MONTH PROJECT
I’ve just launched a new workshop, based on a street / documentary project, undertaken over a 12-month period, on the subject of the English seaside. It begins with an intensive 3-day workshop in Blackpool in September.
This may appeal to street photographers who . . .
feel they have reached a plateau with their work
would like to work on a structured project to produce a meaningful body of work
want to introduce strong story-telling or narrative into their work
would like to focus more on documentary photography
need to be inspired and nudged out of their comfort zone
This is not an introductory workshop and we won't be covering the basics of street photography. It is assumed that participants will already be street photographers who are familiar and comfortable with the genre.
You will follow the creative journey of a substantial project - from concept to book. This assignment-based workshop is the start of a year-long creative investment in a substantial street / documentary project with a tangible output: the production of your book. The date of the initial workshop is 25-26-27 September 2020 (and If social gatherings still not allowed by this time, the workshop will be rearranged in spring 2021 at a time which suits all 6 participants).
Core elements of the project:
A series of coursework exercises to complete prior to the workshop
Participation in a 3-day workshop in Blackpool
Working in your own (in any English seaside town) to add to your body of work
2x Zoom conference calls with Brian after 4 and 9 months
Production of your book - ideally by September 2021
There's lots more information on this page - and do of course contact me if you have any questions. I launched this last night and immediately took two bookings - so I expect demand to be high.
MY CAMERA SETTINGS FOR STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
It’s a question many street photographers ask of other street photographers: what are your camera settings for street photography? I’ve used a tried and tested formula for a long time and it works for me. I’ve shared this approach in my latest YouTube video - HERE.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY Q&A
If you’re into street photography - whether your just learning or are a seasoned hand - you may like to see my series of street photography videos on YouTube. The latest video is a Q&A session, where I answer viewers’ questions on a wide range of street photography topics and issues.
You can see that latest street photography Q&A video here and if you would like to tune-in for future editions, please subscribe to my YouTube channel.
PORTFOLIO REVIEW SESSIONS - ONLINE
Do you feel you need more of a sense of direction as a street photographer? Maybe you some constructive critique and feedback on your work would help? Maybe you’ve hit a hit a creative brick wall . . . or need some help finding your ‘voice’ as a street photographer . . .
If any of the above points ring true, this online Portfolio Review Programme with me could be just what you need. Structured around three core elements, this online skills development session, held online over Zoom, is designed to give you an opportunity for frank and constructive analysis of your work while helping you to develop in any areas that might be holding you back.
The programme costs just £65 and you can read more about it here.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHERS AND INSTAGRAM
There is a lot of street photography on Instagram. But where do you fit in? How can you stand out? What’s the best way to engage with others? I’ve put my thoughts and experiences together to make this video which distills all this into 10 tips. You can see the video here on YouTube.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW 2020 - POSTPONED
You probably already know that, sadly, the Photography Show at the NEC has been postponed due to the corona virus threat. Perhaps you didn’t know, however, is that a new date has been scheduled for the 2020 show: 19-22 September.
As usual, I’ll be there manning the StreetSnappers stand with Alex and I’ll be doing a talk on the ‘Shutter Street’ stage and two talks on the Fujifilm Live Stage. I’ll post dates and times as soon as I know them.
The Photography Show is one of the highlights of the year and we were gutted to hear of the postponement. It is, however, completely understandable and certainly the right decision in these difficult circumstances.
Please keep in touch and if you’re at the NEC in September, do drop by the StreetSnappers stand to say ‘hello’.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY CRITIQUE - JANUARY 2020
If you have attended one of my workshops you’ll have been invited to join the Street Photography Club – a great alumni network of talented street photographers from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. This is a vibrant community of street photographers where we discuss projects, techniques, locations, books and, of course, each others’ images in the form of constructive critique.
Each month I set club members a challenge and they are invited to shoot images on a theme; from those entries, I select 5-6 images which I consider would benefit from some constructive critique – and I then make a YouTube video in which each winning image is critiqued in a live session. Last month that theme was ‘repetition’ (a really useful visual device in street photography) and you can watch the latest video here.
