The fun of Venice Carnival - ‘Carnevale’. It’s hard to know where to begin. Every February, thousands of people flock to the city of Venice to take part in the annual extravaganza of dressing up, partying, celebration - and more than a little madness.

Carnevale is an opportunity to dress up in elaborate outfits and masks - from traditional costumes to contemporary fancy dress - the whimsical, the sinister and the fantastical. The tradition of wearing masks dates back to the 13th century when Venetians used masks to hide their social status and engage in activities that were normally forbidden.

This all presents a great opportunity for street photographers, with opportunities around every corner - which is why I return year after year to run workshops and to complete personal projects such as this.
