Learn the art of street photography against a backdrop full of mystery and intrigue. There’s no place quite like Venice in the winter months; most of the tourists have gone home and the city returns to its ‘real life’ state. Think fog, dark, mysterious alleys, cloaked characters and . . . more fog! It’s all so photogenic.
Whether in colour or black & white, we’ll be shooting stylised, conceptual and abstract images based on classic Venetian iconography with all its shapes, textures and contrast.
You’ll be encouraged to work on a personal project (with full support from Brian) and you should aim to produce a book or zine as a record of your time in Venice.
Venice offers the perfect backdrop for photographic storytelling. This workshop focuses on that fascinating space where street meets documentary photography and you’ll be encouraged to create a photo-essay about the magical ‘La Serenissima’.
We’ll be shooting stylised, conceptual and abstract images based on classic Venetian iconography with all its shapes, textures and contrast. You’ll be encouraged to work on a personal project (with full support from Brian) and there will be a little light ‘homework’ to do prior to the workshop.
You should aim to finish the workshop with a compelling body of work and then go on to produce your own book or zine.
‘Carnevale’ is a uniquely Venetian experience not to be missed and is a truly mouthwatering experience for street photographers! Venice in February is dark, mysterious, a little sinister and usually misty - giving us the most fabulous layered backdrops.
This workshop isn’t about shooting portraits of people in costume: it’s about documenting the madness, the energy, the bizarre and the ‘unusual in the usual’ - in a street and documentary photography style.
This Venice street photography workshop is project-focused, with the emphasis on the carnival; it will combine elements of street, documentary and travel photography, where you’ll produce creative images which reflect real life in this wonderful city. You will discover new ways of telling the story of your travels through great images. There will be lots of structured shooting and you will receive coaching, mentoring and constant feedback from your course leader, Brian Lloyd Duckett.
As well as documenting the colourful carnival, we will explore the ‘less trodden’ Venice away from the tourists, taking in the sights and sounds of this most charismatic of cities well off the beaten track. In a small group (maximum of 6 participants), you will discover the city’s photographic ‘hot spots’ and learn how to shoot striking, compelling and witty images with a professional street photographer and photojournalist.
This is more ‘photography’ than my usual ‘street photography’. In this workshop you’ll have influences of documentary, seascape, landscape and of course a little street street photography. But we won’t be tied to any specific genres - this is all about documenting ‘normal life’ in the Venetian lagoon and on some of the less inhabited islands (and we will spend some time in the city of Venice itself).
Our aim is not to create the ‘pretty postcard’ scenes which many workshops offer - this is more about documenting real life and aiming to tell the story of this amazing location.
This new workshop gets us out into the lagoon and to some of the islands, which could include Pellestrina, Torcello, Mazzorbo, St Erasmo, Burano, St Pietro and Giudecca (the precise itinerary will be dependent on the weather).
March usually brings a mixture of sunshine, mist and fog so we can expect some moody and dramatic backdrops.
We will travel to the islands via the public waterbus from the city, where we’ll all be staying. As people have widely differing tastes and budgets, you’ll need to organise your own accommodation - and of course Brian will be on hand to advise if necessary.
Venice and the Venetian lagoon offer the perfect backdrop for photographic storytelling. This workshop focuses on life in the lagoon: the clam fishermen, the abandoned buildings, the village communities and lots of ‘real life’. You’ll be encouraged to create a project-based photo-essay (with full support from Brian) and there will be a little light ‘homework’ to do prior to the workshop.
You should aim to finish the workshop with a compelling body of work and then go on to produce your own book or zine.
